Modular Certificate in Staging and Lighting Design

The Certificate in Staging and Lighting Design enables students to acquire critical theoretical knowledge, and practical skills in rigging and staging, set construction, and in the installation of elements required by staged ‘live’ events. Students learn fundamental concepts and technical skills needed to design lighting for events, before gaining experience in the design of lighting arrangements to support a given artistic vision. Students learn why lighting has traditionally played an essential role in the success of performances/events. They learn how to use lighting to alter an audience’s emotions and moods. Students hone both technical and creative skills in lighting and appreciate why they go hand-in-hand when creating an appropriate atmosphere, helping audiences connect with the show. Students also learn technical digital drafting skills by translating technical hand drawings to a digital format. Throughout all modules, students gain invaluable experience working in teams, and learn to appreciate why teamwork is vital to anyone wanting a career in show production and events.
