Introduction to Mathematical Models of the Epidemiology & Control of Infectious Diseases + Modelling for malaria and vector-borne disease (Classroom)
About This Course
• Understand the key concepts of infectious disease transmission and control - and the differences with non-infectious diseases.
• Explore models of different types of infectious disease.
• Understand how different control measures (e.g., vaccination, treatment, isolation, quarantine, travel restrictions) will be effective, or ineffective, for different diseases.
• Read modelling papers to critically evaluate and interpret their findings
• Understand in broad terms how modelling informs policymaking.
• Extend the knowledge acquired to apply to dengue/vector-borne diseases through an in-depth practical exercise working in groups.
What You'll Learn
This course provides an intensive introduction to these underlying principles, with material taught in an accessible way that does not require a detailed mathematical background. This will allow professionals from a range of backgrounds to gain a solid grounding in the basics of infectious disease modelling and its applications, as well as gain practical experience in the process of developing models. This will enable participants to critically evaluate outputs from models as well as to apply these principles to problems encountered in their work. The second component of this course, "Modelling for Malaria and Vector-Borne Disease" will allow participants to focus on extended and in-depth small group projects.
Entry Requirements
