About This Course
- Describe key elements and functions of the neuro-immune-endocrine interactions that preserve the body’s homeostasis
- Explain using a psycho-neuro-immunological approach, how early life events might make someone more pain vulnerable
- Appropriately apply the concepts of stress biology to clinical examples
- Identify equipment that can be used to assess for pain sensitivity
- Describe process for testing centrally modulated responses to discomfort
What You'll Learn
All health professionals are likely to work with patients in pain. Increasingly we are needing to be more sophisticated about how we conceptualise pain even in acute injury or post-surgical states. No longer is a simplistic tissue-based view of pain adequate for best patient care. This is especially so when pain persists beyond expected healing times.
Drawing on research from psychoneuroimmunology, the study of the effect of cognitions and emotions on biological processes, this workshop will allow the participant to explore the role and interaction of the neural, immune and endocrine systems on pain and recovery.
The presenter will draw on topics of his Chapter published in the edited textbook ‘Psychologically-informed Physiotherapy: Embedding psychological perspectives within clinical management’ and enhance this with novel approaches to clinical assessment and treatment.
The Pain and Movement Reasoning Model, co-authored by the presenter, will be presented as a biopsychosocial framework and tool to support clinical reasoning. The design of the Workshop is deliberately not discipline-specific but over the two days participants will be given the opportunity to plan how new knowledge and skills can be adopted into their individual clinical approach.
