Laboratory Diagnosis of Malaria by Microscopy
About This Course
1. Understand the life cycle of Malaria parasite.
2. Know the incidence of malaria in Singapore and worldwide
3. Know the signs, symptoms and complications of malaria infection
4. Understand the importance of correct identification of malaria
5. List and identify the consumables, stains and materials needed for microscopic detection and identification of the various malaria species.
6. Perform thin and thick films using blood samples to detect and identify malaria.
7. Perform malaria parasite load count (parasite index) using thin film.
8. Demonstrate competency in detecting and identifying the various species and stages of malaria.
9. Proper reporting of malaria positive cases
10. Demonstrate the safety precautions involved when processing blood samples for malaria detection
What You'll Learn
There will be hands-on opportunities for you to develop the capabilities needed to detect and identify malaria parasites through microscopy using thin as well as thick blood films. Staining methods and parasitaemia counts will also be covered.
