About This Course
This course has two parts. The first part offers an introduction to GIS and outlines the components of geographic information systems (GIS). The second part describes the different sources of geospatial data collection as a basic understanding of how the data is collected leads to a better appreciation of data quality.
What You'll Learn
It provides a guide on the nature of geographic data by explaining the representation of geographic data and definition of field-based and object-based data. It also describes the two basic data model of vector and raster. An understanding of how to assess the quality of the geospatial data is also a pre-requisite to better management of geospatial data. Without a good understanding of data quality, it is very likely that the management, maintenance and analysis of the data in geographic information systems (GIS) may be handled inappropriately. It might even lead to incorrect analysis and conclusion.
