Pathology for Researchers: Histology and Basic Lab Techniques (Synchronous e-learning)
About This Course
1 Laboratory techniques in tissue-based research
- Learn about the different types of tissue samples handled in a histopathology lab
- Appreciate the spectrum of types of tests on tissue to detect proteins and nucleic acid
- Understand the workflow of tissue processing into formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue
- Understand the workflow of immunohistochemical testing
- Be able to conduct basic interpretation of Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
- Know the workflow for extraction of nucleic acids from FFPE tissues for molecular testing (eg next-generation-sequencing [NGS])
2 Histology
Learning objectives:
- Be able to recognise normal histology of different tissue types (eg epithelial tissue, mesenchymal tissue)
- Learn how to recognise inflammatory cells in tissue
- Be familiar with normal histology of a range of organs
- Recognise histology of selected common cancers
- Know how to perform hands-on examination of pathology microscopic slides using virtual microscopy
What You'll Learn
In the Lab Techniques section, participants will be introduced to some basic forms of tissue that the pathology laboratory handles, and how these tissues may be processed for microscopic analysis, immunohistochemical analysis and molecular testing
In the Histology section, participants will be introduced to a range of normal tissues, including epithelial and connective tissue, and also inflammatory cells (leukocytes) and selected common cancers Participants will be given the opportunity to perform hands on virtual microscopy using virtual microscopic slides, and try their hand and recognising tissue types and cancers
On the final day, participants will be assessed on their understanding of basic laboratory techniques and histologic interpretation of microscopic images
