Industry Best Practices in Compliance with International Safety Standards for Safe Installation, Operation & Maintenance of Energy Storage Systems
About This Course
1. Gain familiarity with critical safety requirements in relevant international standards namely IEC 62485-2, IEC 62281, IEC 61427.
2. Identify types and applications of commonly used grid-tied ESS.
3. Identify key components of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
4. Identify hazards (Mechanical, Electrical, Electrochemical, Thermal etc.) associated with BESSs’ entire lifecycle from their installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, to decommissioning.
5. With Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), assess BESSs’ failure modes (Over-voltage, Under-voltage, High C-rate, High & Low Temperature), and their effects (Thermal Runaway, Release of Explosive Gases, Spilling of Electrolyte, Electrocution etc.) and explain industry best practices that could reduce/remove the risks.
6. Carry out hands-on assignments (Setting up a Battery Bank with BMS system at Cell and System level) with Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) and observe safety good practices while operating and maintaining 3 BESS (Lead Acid, Lithium Ion and Redox Flow Battery Systems) at Energy System Live Laboratories in Temasek Polytechnic.
7. Discuss safety requirements in the context of BESSs’ specific applications (Residential, Commercial, Industry, Stackable BESS, Extreme Temperature Operating Conditions, Repurposed BESS etc.)
