Advanced Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription (Classroom & Asynchronous e-Learning)
About This Course
Persons with chronic conditions often present with systemic deficits in cardiorespiratory fitness and health that impact their functional capacity, effort tolerance, and quality of life. Demonstrating competence in exercise training while considering the multi-systems limitations is key to safe and effective training programmes for persons with chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary and/or neurological conditions.
This course equips physiotherapists with the knowledge and skills to design and implement safe, evidence-based exercise rehabilitation programmes for individuals with chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurological conditions. Through a blended format of self-directed e-learning and an intensive 4-day workshop, participants will consolidate their understanding of pathophysiology, interpret exercise assessments, apply evidence-based clinical prescription approaches, and adapt exercise training interventions. Emphasis is placed on integrating outcome measures, monitoring precautions and/or risks, and addressing behaviour change to optimise long-term health outcomes.
The “Advanced Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription for Physiotherapists” course builds on competencies gained from the “Intermediate Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription” course. Participants are encouraged to complete the intermediate course, if they have no or minimal knowledge and skills in conducting exercise tests and exercise prescriptions.
This course will elevate your capability to prescribe and design exercise training programmes across many settings, including community-based rehabilitation settings. The enhanced capability may present opportunities to collaborate with other settings for a seamless, continuous exercise training journey for these patients.
What You'll Learn
1. Explain the pathophysiology and exercise limitations of selected clinical conditions related to chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or neurological impairments.
2. Describe and examine exercise tests suitable for selected clinical conditions related to chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary and/or neurological conditions with considerations to precautions and risks.
3. Interpret and synthesise assessment data using suggested clinical reasoning, decision-making models, and evidence-based practice to inform clinical exercise prescription.
4. Design safe and effective exercise training programmes for individuals with chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or neurological conditions, with considerations to evidence-based exercise prescription, precautions, and contraindications to exercise and outcome measures relevant to the specific clinical populations.
Entry Requirements
Minimum 3 years of working experience in physiotherapy with some experience in cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal and/or geriatrics/neurological rehabilitation. Participants should already know the overview of maximal/submaximal exercise testing, exercise prescription and exercise physiology in the entry-level programmes, and be able to conduct exercise testing and prescribe exercises.
