About This Course
This module covers the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of common symptoms in serious life- limiting illnesses including common emergencies encountered in palliative care. Students will be able to apply medical and nursing knowledge and skills, in caring for patients with serious life-limiting illness.

Students will learn
1. Symptom assessment in palliative care, and assessment tools
2. Pain, principles of pain management
3. Nausea and vomiting, dyspnoea
4. Malignant bowel obstruction, anorexia and cachexia in serious illness
5. Delirium, fatigue & pruritus
6. Patients with spinal cord compression/ cauda equine syndrome, brain metastases/ seizures, superior vena cava obstruction and cardiac tamponade
7. Patients with electrolytes, metabolic and glycaemic derangements including tumour lysis syndrome and syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), hypercalcemia, hypo and hyperglycaemia
8. Patients with infection including febrile neutropenia and hematologic complications
9. Application of basic nursing care and managing its complications
10. Complex wound management
11. Management and care of common drains, catheters, and lines
12. Terminal care of patients in their days or last hours

Entry Requirements
All applicants should possess the following requirements at the point of application:
-A local Polytechnic Diploma (Nursing), Degree in Health Sciences (Nursing), or nursing qualification equivalent;
-A valid practising certificate from the Singapore Nursing Board; and
-At least 2 years of clinical practice and with a minimum of 1 year in the discipline of study.
