About This Course
1. Appreciate the use of abstractions and composition to deal with complexities in computing systems.
2. Explain commonly used computing terms and the relations between them.
3. Develop simple computer programs using branches, loops, standard input/output, and functions.
4. Understand how data and programs are represented and executed within a computer.
5. Develop an aptitude in finding and using existing tools to explore how computer systems and applications work.
What You'll Learn
This course introduces students to basic computing principles, including abstraction and composition, while providing a broad introduction to the field of computer science, including computer organisation, operating systems, data management, distributed applications. It will introduce students to basic programming methodologies and problem solving techniques through a simple structured programming language.
Topics covered may include:
- An abstract view of computer hardware, its components (Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory, disks, network interface, input devices, display) and how they work together.
- Basics of Python programming.
- Python control statements (branching and looping).
- Basic Python libraries
- The role of an operating system and how it interfaces between hardware and applications.
- Overview of key abstractions provided by the operation system, such as files and processes.
- What a software application is made of, i.e., code and data, and how a computer program is constructed (i.e., concepts of compiler, executable, libraries).
- Concepts in networked computing, such as the Internet, client/server applications, and what is a protocol.
- Key concepts in database management, e.g., differences between a database and files, relational tables, simple Structured Query Language (SQL) queries.
