About This Course
Knowledge and Insight (Understanding)
• General Practitioner’s (GP’s) role in our healthcare system in the care of the newborn
• Components of newborn screening after birth, and what congenital abnormalities may surface later in the neonatal period
• Up-to-date knowledge and epidemiology of common neonatal conditions in neonates, and the importance of breastfeeding, timely immunizations, and parental guidance for neuro-stimulation
• How socioeconomic status, psycho-emotional health of parents affects neonatal outcomes, and a child’s neurodevelopment from the very beginning
• Common congenital and surgical conditions presenting to primary healthcare, (e.g hypospadias and undescended testes)
• Range of presentation of tongue-tie in a newborn
Application of Knowledge & Insight
• Utility of National Neonatal Jaundice Guidelines to guide management of neonates with jaundice (including anticipatory parental advice)
• Counselling on breastfeeding; important tricks and tips in the first 2 weeks after childbirth, and troubleshooting common problems
• Counselling first-time parents on parentcraft (common things to expect in the first 90 days of life, for example: expected weight gain, feeding frequency, fussing, sleeping position and habits, stool changes, common neonatal rashes)
• Recognition of emotional changes and social issues in caregivers/families post-arrival of a newborn (such as postnatal blues, anxiety, depression)
• Recognize common lumps and bumps, including lymph node swelling
• Recognize urogenital complaints including phimosis and balanoposthitis
• Recognize umbilical granuloma in the neonate and initiate treatment
• Recognize variations of common acute complaints in children with prior paediatric surgical interventions (e.g nephrostomy, mitrofanoff) with identification of red flags for specialist intervention
What You'll Learn
Entry Requirements
(1) Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree or equivalent
(2) At least 2 years post-registration
(3) English language requirement: applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English must fulfil a minimum level of English proficiency
