Principles of Sustainable Healthcare Practice
About This Course
This course takes a deep dive into the complex field of sustainable healthcare. Learners will gain an understanding of the frameworks used to guide climate mitigation and adaptation interventions in healthcare .Structured to establish the critical links between climate change, human health, and health systems, the course covers key interventions and solutions for major carbon hotspots throughout a health system so that learners will drive healthcare decarbonisation, effective resource stewardship and the transformation of healthcare practices.
What You'll Learn
This course lays the groundwork for the entire Master of Science in Sustainable Heathcare (MSc SH) programme by highlighting the critical links between climate change, human health, and health systems. By understanding how healthcare services contribute to climate change and its adverse effects on health, learners will gain an appreciation for the urgency and necessity of healthcare decarbonisation, effective resource stewardship, planetary health action, and the transformation of health systems and healthcare practices.
2. Decarbonising healthcare care provision and systems:
The course will provide students with a holistic understanding of specific areas within the healthcare sector where carbon emissions can be reduced. With reference to specific examples of key healthcare emission sources, students will learn about the benefits of climate mitigation within the healthcare sector, and identify critical gaps in existing mitigation and adaptation efforts.
3. Interdisciplinary approach:
The interdisciplinary nature of the course equips students with a well-rounded understanding of healthcare system operations, environmental science, and sustainability. Students will be provided with essential insight to facilitate their transition to leadership roles in promoting environmentally sustainable practices in the healthcare setting.
This is the first course in National University of Singapore (NUS) that focuses on sustainable healthcare delivery and serves as the first pillar of the MSc programme. It anchors all subsequent courses in a solid understanding of the context, challenges, and opportunities within the field of sustainable medicine. Building upon this foundation, students can delve deeper into specific areas like carbon footprinting, policy analysis, or implementing targeted interventions.
