PTY6203 Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Imaging (Classroom & Asynchronous e-Learning)
About This Course
The module is designed to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in integrating diagnostic imaging of musculoskeletal conditions as part of safe and effective physiotherapy clinical practice. The module aims to upskill physiotherapists with the ability to confidently determine indicators and contraindications for the order of plain film radiography for musculoskeletal assessment, including the ethical considerations in use of diagnostic imaging. Concepts and skills needed for analysis and interpretation of imaging findings, and understanding of investigation reports will be covered, with the focus placed on plain film radiography. This module will also strengthen the physiotherapist’s ability to incorporate imaging findings into problem identification, management strategies, intervention goals and patient education in accordance with clinical practice guidelines. A key emphasis of this module is patient safety and the enablement of physiotherapists to communicate effectively with other healthcare practitioners on appropriate action plan following diagnostic imaging.
What You'll Learn
1. Outline Radiation Protection (Ionising Radiation) Regulations and Radiation Protection Act.
2. Differentiate the capabilities, benefits and limitations of plain film radiography compared to other diagnostic imaging modalities for musculoskeletal assessments.
3. Explain the different plain film radiography views for various body regions, including the reasoning for the specific views.
4. Evaluate the indications and contraindications for plain film radiography based on ethical considerations, assessment findings and clinical decision-making rules.
5. Differentiate between normal and common pathological or degenerative changes in plain film radiography for the musculoskeletal system.
6. Perform basic interpretation of plain film radiography for the musculoskeletal system.
7. Integrate diagnostic imaging findings and reports into clinical practice by correlating the findings with clinical examination and findings.
8. Enhance professional communication to patients, caregivers and other healthcare practitioners regarding diagnostic imaging findings and the appropriate action plans.
