EEE6212 Integrated Project in Electrical Systems (Classroom & Synchronous e-Learning)
About This Course
This course is an independent, self-directed project taken alongside the modules in the Graduate Certificate in Electrical Engineering Professional Practices. Participants will apply their understanding of electrical engineering design and project management to investigate and develop solutions for complex electrical installation challenges in building environments.
The project focuses on key areas such as cable sizing, protection device selection and coordination, and adherence to SS 638, relevant industry standards, and functional safety requirements. Defined in consultation with a supervisor, the project scope requires the use of first-principles analysis, engineering judgement, and simulation tools to support design decisions.
Each participant is responsible for contributing individually across various tasks, including literature review, simulation studies, technical design, and reflective reporting. The course culminates in the submission of a comprehensive technical report that demonstrates depth of analysis, sound design rationale, and alignment with professional engineering standards.
What You'll Learn
1. Identify complex problems in electrical installation design, including cable sizing, selection, and coordination of protection devices, and establishing the bounds for developing a reasonable set of solutions within the constraints of time, resources, and technical feasibility, while ensuring compliance with SS638 and other relevant standards.
2. Conduct a focused literature review to identify and propose investigative-based solutions, and to summarise key knowledge for executing the design.
3. Plan, schedule, budget, and manage the project, integrating technical knowledge and skills with considerations for safety, compliance, economic feasibility, and ethical responsibilities in electrical installation design.
4. Execute the project by conducting investigations of complex problems in electrical installation design using investigative-based knowledge and methods, including simulation studies, fault analysis, protection system coordination and interpretation of data, to synthesize information and provide valid conclusions using industry-standard software tools.
5. Reflect realistically and honestly with high level of professionalism in the report on the project implementation and achievements, thereby contributing to improvements in his/her project management skills and culture of life-long learning.
6. Write a concise and professional technical report detailing the electrical installation design, protection coordination methodology, simulation results, and compliance with industry standards.
