FDM6200 Fire Dynamics
About This Course
As urban environments grow smarter and more interconnected through Industry 4.0 technologies, fire safety must keep pace. With over 3.7 million fires and 19,600 deaths globally in 2022, the need for skilled fire safety professionals is more critical than ever.
This course supports Reskilling and Upskilling efforts by equipping participants with essential knowledge in Fire Dynamics — the science behind fire ignition, growth, and spread in both indoor (e.g., buildings) and outdoor (e.g., vegetation) settings. Through real-world case studies and interactive learning, participants will understand how Cyber-Physical Systems (e.g., smart sensors and alarms), Data Analytics, and digital modelling are transforming fire detection, prediction, and prevention strategies.
Aligned with Sustainability goals, this course emphasises proactive fire risk reduction and the design of safer, more resilient environments. Ideal for professionals in the built environment, emergency response, and regulatory sectors, this training prepares participants to contribute effectively to fire-safe communities in a digitally connected world.
What You'll Learn
Fire Dynamics Part 1 introduces the foundational principles of fire dynamics and how fires behave across different fuel types—gases, liquids, and solids. Participants will explore how fire ignites, spreads, and interacts with materials and environments. Through practical examples and case studies, they will gain the knowledge required to assess risks and support fire-safe planning in increasingly complex settings.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand how fires start and develop in various fuel types.
• Assess the influence of environmental and material factors on fire behaviour.
• Interpret real-world incidents to support proactive fire risk management.
• Apply fire dynamics knowledge in planning for safe and efficient systems.
Fire Dynamics Part 2
Building on the first session, Fire Dynamics Part 2 focuses on fire development in enclosed spaces, combustion by-products, and human behaviour in emergencies. Participants will experience live fire scenarios at the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Fire Research Centre and Compartment Fire Behaviour Training (CFBT) Complex, reinforcing the application of fire dynamics in real-time settings.
Learning Objectives:
• Analyse fire development in compartmentalised environments.
• Recognise the impact of smoke and toxic gases on life safety.
• Evaluate human responses to fire to improve emergency planning.
• Observe live demonstrations to enhance situational understanding.
• Apply key insights through scenario-based tasks for real-world relevance.
Entry Requirements
There are no minimum requirements. However, possession of a relevant educational or technical background is preferred or may provide an advantage. The participant must make the informed decision on whether he/she can successfully complete the module.
