Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical – Rapid Transit Technology)
About This Course
Under this renewal application, there will be TWO pathways for this course, namely “Employee Path” for company -sponsored and/or self-funded participants working with Public Transport Operators (PTO), and “Public Path” which is open for public participants. Refer to Section 3: Course Curriculum for further details.
Under the Employee Path, this course aims to provide graduates from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and in-service staff with NITEC or Higher NITEC qualifications with the skills and knowledge to become the next generation of rail engineering professionals. It enables learners to acquire a diploma qualification while remaining in the workforce, supporting their career progression and advancement within the Rapid Transit Transport (RTT) sector.
For the Public Path, this course aims to train learners in the areas of railway engineering related to rolling stock, permanent way, railway systems and signalling. There will be specialised modules like Rapid Transit Signalling System, Rolling Stock Dynamics and Maintenance, and Railway Infrastructures Maintenance and Management covering Tunnel Ventilation Systems (TVS), tunnel construction, permanent way maintenance and Maintenance Management System (MMS). There will also be general engineering foundation modules around mechanical engineering. This training will allow trainees to acquire the basic knowledge and practical skills to work more effectively in the RTT sector.
Upon completion, students will have a solid foundation in railway engineering principles to be able to advance in their career through knowledge and skills upgrading in the areas of rolling stock and permanent way, undertaking job responsibilities of a senior technical officer or assistant engineer.
What You'll Learn
(i) Explain railway infrastructure principles, including track design, maintenance, and construction techniques.
(ii) Describe what is rolling stock engineering, including train performance and vehicle dynamics.
(iii) Describe the fundamentals of railway signalling and train control, including justifying the motivation behind transiting into moving block signalling systems and Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) systems.
(iv) Compare and contrast the different railway electrification and power systems, including overhead catenary systems (OCS) and Third Rail systems.
(v) Discuss safety and risk management in rail transport, covering system assurance, asset reliability, and regulatory compliance.
(vi) Explain the principles of railway operations, including capacity planning and performance optimisation.
