FEP6600 Fire Safety Engineering Design
About This Course
This integrated programme introduces participants to performance-based fire safety engineering within Singapore’s regulatory framework, with a strong focus on industrial environments such as manufacturing plants, logistics facilities, chemical processing sites, and high-hazard operations. It highlights how human behaviour in fire and emergency scenarios differs in industrial settings, where factors such as shift patterns, spatial complexity, equipment layout, and process risks influence evacuation dynamics. The course emphasises the use of digital simulation tools—such as Pathfinder—to model occupant movement, egress routes, and congestion points under industrial conditions, leveraging behavioural and operational data to design effective and safe evacuation strategies.
Participants will develop hands-on skills in interpreting industrial risk data, simulating realistic emergency scenarios, and evaluating fire safety design options that meet stringent life safety and operational continuity requirements. They will also gain a comprehensive understanding of Singapore’s Performance-Based Fire Engineering Regime, including the Fire Engineering Design Brief (FEDB), Fire Safety Engineering Report (FSER), and adherence to Fire Engineering Guidelines, with examples contextualised for industrial facilities.
By integrating advanced modelling, data-driven analysis, and structured engineering workflows, the course supports Industry 4.0 goals of digitalisation, simulation, and predictive safety. It equips professionals to implement robust, performance-based fire safety solutions tailored to modern industrial environments—enhancing resilience, reducing downtime risk, and improving overall safety outcomes.
What You'll Learn
• Analyse human behaviour in industrial fire emergencies—taking into account factors such as equipment layout, process hazards, shift arrangements, and worker movement patterns—and apply this behavioural data to evacuation modelling.
• Use Pathfinder to simulate egress scenarios across diverse industrial environments, identify bottlenecks around machinery, storage areas, or process lines, interpret simulation results, and evaluate design options that enhance life safety and support operational continuity.
• Understand Singapore’s Performance-Based Fire Engineering regime in the context of industrial facilities.
• Apply Fire Engineering Guidelines to develop compliant, performance-based fire safety solutions for industrial settings, addressing challenges such as large floorplates, hazardous processes, complex layouts, and high-occupancy operational zones.
Entry Requirements
There are no minimum requirements. However, possession of a relevant educational or technical background is preferred or may provide an advantage. The participant must make the informed decision on whether he/she can successfully complete the module.
