Human Computer Interaction Theory and Practice
About This Course
This Human Computer Interaction (HCI) course provides an in-depth introduction to the design principles and practices. Learners will explore foundational HCI theories such as cognitive models, interaction paradigms, and user centered design and apply these concepts. Emphasising user experience (UX) design, usability, and user research, learners will be equipped with both conceptual understanding and hands on skills for creating effective interactive systems. This course is ideal for those pursuing careers in UX design, interface development, or human centred interaction design, supporting the development of evidence based design decisions and prepares learners to address ethical, social, and accessibility challenges in modern technology.
As this micro-credential course is only offered in the FlexiMasters in Game Design, Art and Technology programme, learners are required to enrol into the programme and complete all required courses within this programme.
What You'll Learn
1. Explain and apply core theories and principles of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), including user centered design, usability, and user experience.
2. Identify user needs and translate findings into actionable design requirements for interactive systems.
3. Plan and conduct user research and task analysis to inform evidence-based design decisions grounded in real world contexts.
4. Create interface prototypes at varying levels of fidelity to effectively visualize and communicate design concepts.
5. Evaluate interactive systems using analytical and empirical methods to assess usability, efficiency, and overall user experience.
6. Critically assess ethical, social, and accessibility implications of technology design and determine their impact on diverse user groups.
Entry Requirements
Learners from various academic and professional backgrounds are welcome - especially in computer science, art, design, media, and engineering. No prior artistic education is required. Learners with the following are encouraged to apply:
- Passion for game design and technology.
- An IELTS score of ≥ 6.5 or a TOEFL score of ≥ 90, taken within the last two years if English is not your first language, or if your medium of instruction at the tertiary level was not English.
- An artistic portfolio and/or demo reel may be required to showcase your creativity, technical skills and understanding of game design principles and/or visual development. Include game prototypes, level designs, 3D models, animations, concept art or process documentation. Please disclose any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in your work.
Note: Shortlisting will be conducted.
