Specialist Certificate in Marine Electrical and Electronic Systems Design (Classroom & Asynchronous e-Learning)
About This Course
The following are the three Competency Units (CUs) that constitute this micro-credential.
CU1: Marine Electric Machines
• Perform circuit examination capabilities for single-phase and three-phase Alternating Current (AC) shipboard circuits by applying power factor correction techniques, demonstrating the ability to analyse resistive and AC networks.
• Evaluate Alternating Current (AC)/Direct Current (DC) machines for marine applications by assessing its design features and performance characteristics, demonstrating the ability to improve the marine electrical networks.
CU2: Marine Electrical Systems Design
• Evaluate shipboard electrical architecture by analysing electrical power plant equipment, distribution systems and protection devices, demonstrating the ability to uphold operational reliability in maritime environments.
• Optimise shipboard electrical performance by evaluating shipboard electrical installation designs and selecting generator sizing, battery and electrical cable, demonstrating the ability to uphold operational and safety standards.
CU3: Navigation and Communication Systems
• Integrate marine navigation systems architecture by defining and evaluating sensors’ requirements, demonstrating the ability to deliver compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) and classification society requirements and support safe and efficient shipboard operations.
• Integrate marine communication systems architecture by defining and evaluating Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), safety and emergency communications systems requirements, demonstrating the ability to deliver compliance with IMO and classification society requirements and support safe and efficient shipboard operations.
What You'll Learn
It is structured around three core Competency Units (CUs): Marine Electric Machines (CU1), Marine Electrical Systems Design (CU2), and Navigation and Communication Systems (CU3). Delivered through a blended e-learning format, the course aims for participants to develop the competency to design, analyse, and evaluate complete shipboard electrical systems, encompassing power generation, power distribution, electric propulsion, and power quality management, as well as designing, integrating, and evaluating navigation sensors and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)-compliant communication systems.
The competencies gained are crucial for the industry's advancement, enabling participants to integrate their knowledge into system-level applications for vessel safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. Graduates will be highly valuable to shipyards, classification societies, marine equipment manufacturers, and shipping companies, particularly as the maritime industry advances toward electrification and smart ship technologies.
