About This Course

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to computer networking, focusing on the design, operation, and analysis of layered communication protocols. Participants will explore the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) / Internet Protocol (IP) networking model in depth, with emphasis on the functions of the Data Link, Network, and Transport layers. Core topics include addressing, forwarding, error and flow control, Local Area Network (LAN) switching, Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), and the Spanning Tree Protocol, as well as subnetting, routing, fragmentation, and reassembly at the network layer.

The course also covers advanced concepts such as Network Address Translation (NAT), the transition from Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) to Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), and the distinction between the data plane and control plane, including the operation of routing protocols and Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). At the transport layer, participants will analyse and compare TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), learning how flow control, congestion control, and connection management support reliable or lightweight communication.

Through lectures, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will develop the ability to design, configure, and evaluate network architectures. They will also gain hands-on experience analysing protocol behaviour using network simulation tools and packet traces. By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply their knowledge to solve practical networking problems, evaluate design trade-offs, and explain protocol operations in real-world communication scenarios.

What You'll Learn

1. Explain fundamental networking concepts by describing the layered Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) / Internet Protocol (IP) model, its relationship with the OSI model, and the functions of each layer.

2. Apply addressing and forwarding mechanisms at the Data Link and Network layers, including Media Access Control (MAC) addressing, IP addressing, subnetting, and address resolution.

3. Configure and analyse Local Area Networks (LANs) by utilising switches, Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), and the Spanning Tree Protocol to achieve efficient and loop-free designs.

4. Evaluate and implement packet delivery services by demonstrating routing, fragmentation/reassembly, and the role of both the data plane and control plane in end-to-end communication.

5. Assess techniques for addressing scalability and transition challenges by explaining the principles of Network Address Translation (NAT), identifying limitations of Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), and describing the structure and benefits of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6).

6. Differentiate between transport protocols by comparing the design and operation of TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), including reliability, congestion control, and suitability for different applications.

7. Analyse network communication traces to identify protocol behaviour at the Data Link, Network, and Transport layers, and justify design or troubleshooting decisions based on observed evidence.
