About This Course

This course is designed for professionals such as metrologists, test engineers, calibration specialists, process control engineers, researchers, and flow measurement solution providers who are involved in industrial flow measurement and inspection activities. It equips participants with applied skills in flow metrology and measurement uncertainty analysis to support process monitoring, performance measurement, and quality assurance in manufacturing environments.

Aligned with the growth of the Digital Economy and Industry 4.0 (I4.0), where manufacturing systems are increasingly automated and data-driven, accurate and reliable flow measurement is essential to support the monitoring of process performance metrics, the validation of measurement quality, and the optimisation of process conditions. This course enables learners to apply flow measurement techniques as part of automation process control practices, ensuring that measurement data is fit for purpose for operational decision-making.

Participants will develop the ability to select and apply appropriate flow measurement techniques, evaluate measurement results and associated uncertainties against process and compliance requirements, and recommend follow-up actions to maintain measurement reliability, process stability, and quality of manufacturing outputs.

What You'll Learn

This course develops learners’ competencies aligned with the emerging skillset of Automation Process Control, where flow measurement is used to monitor performance metrics, ensure measurement quality, and support optimisation of manufacturing processes within the Digital Economy and I4.0 context.

Through structured & applied learning, learners will understand the operating principles of flow meter technologies, analyse flow measurement requirements in manufacturing processes, and select suitable metrology techniques based on fluid properties & operating conditions. The course emphasises the ability to evaluate measurement accuracy & uncertainty, verify correct application of measurement techniques, and support data-driven decisions to maintain process performance & product quality.

Learners will develop the ability to interpret measurement outcomes and recommend appropriate follow-up & corrective actions, supporting continuous improvement, process optimisation, and reliable manufacturing outputs, in line with the automation & process control skillsets.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe the functions & purposes of positive displacement, differential pressure, velocity, and mass flow meters
- Identify appropriate flow meter types for given manufacturing processes and explain their intended purposes
- Explain fundamental techniques used to measure fluid flow, including direct and indirect methods
- Analyse flow measurement needs in relation to the functional capabilities of identified flow meters
- Select & justify suitable metrology techniques and flow meters based on fluid properties and process requirements
- Describe how process parameters such as pressure, temperature, viscosity, and flow regime influence measurement accuracy
- Verify correct application of metrology techniques and flow meters by checking alignment with process requirements
- Determine & recommend appropriate follow-up actions and corrective measures
