About This Course
This module equips learners to support the holistic well-being of elderly clients by addressing their emotional, mental, and social needs. Learners will identify common mental health concerns, apply empathetic communication, and plan meaningful activities that promote dignity, autonomy, and active aging.
What You'll Learn
1. Explain the biopsychosocial needs of elderly clients, including the effects of aging, loss, loneliness, cognitive decline and to design care plans that reflect patient empowerment on self-care and active aging.
2. Identify signs of common mental health conditions in seniors, such as depression, anxiety, dementia, and delirium, and understand when and how to escalate concerns based on emergency response and crisis management protocols.
3. Demonstrate effective communication strategies, including verbal and non-verbal techniques, active listening, and culturally sensitive engagement, to build trust and rapport with clients and their families.
4. Plan and facilitate therapeutic and recreational activities tailored to the cognitive, emotional, and physical needs of elderly clients, including those with dementia or mental health challenges.
5. Support clients’ social well-being and dignity through empathetic interactions, relationship-building, and appropriate interventions that encourage autonomy and meaningful engagement.
6. Apply a holistic care approach that integrates physical, psychosocial, and spiritual support in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.

Entry Requirements
1) At least a C6 pass in GCE ‘O’ or ‘N’ Level in any 1 subject or equivalent, OR
2) National ITE Certificate (NITEC) or Higher National ITE Certificate (Higher NITEC).
