Modular Certificate in Engineering Fundamentals
About This Course
1) Module Title: Principles of Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- This module equips students with the necessary foundation for electrical circuit analysis. Students will learn to apply techniques in analysing basic elements (resistors, capacitors and inductors) with Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) power sources. Students will also learn concepts of electromagnetism and its application in power generation, transformer and motor operation.
2) Module Title: Principles of Mechanics
- This module exposes students to the basic concepts of statics, strength of materials, dynamics, and fundamentals of mechanics. It will enable them to analyse and solve mechanics-related problems with the knowledge acquired. The key topics that will be covered in this module are Units and Vectors, Forces and Moments, Static Equilibrium, Free Body Diagrams, Centroids, Mechanical Stress and Strain, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Momentum, Conservation of Energy, Friction and Applications, Work-Energy Interaction, Linear Motion, Angular Motion, Mechanical Oscillations, and Simple Pendulum Oscillations.
3) Module Title: Engineering Materials
- This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of engineering materials. They will be equipped with a robust understanding of the characteristics, behaviours and processing techniques of different engineering materials used in real-world engineering contexts. In addition, they will learn topics covering the properties and applications of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composites and non-metallic materials. Students will also gain insights into material degradation such as corrosion and fatigue, and the methodologies employed in failure investigation. This will enable them to explore diverse treatment processes and manufacturing methods applicable to these materials.
