Carbon Management for the Chemical Industry
About This Course
This intensive two-day course equips chemical and process engineers with practical tools to lead industrial decarbonization. Learners will master greenhouse gas emission inventory construction (Scope 1: direct emissions, Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy, and Scope 3: value chain emissions), navigate complex regulations such as the European Union Emissions Trading System and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and apply technical solutions including Pinch Analysis and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage.
Through hands-on sessions and real-world case studies, learners develop cost-effective Marginal Abatement Cost curves and phased decarbonization roadmaps. This course bridges the gap between technical operations and strategic carbon management to ensure organizational compliance and competitive sustainability.
What You'll Learn
1. Explain greenhouse gas emission types and identify Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and Scope 3 (value chain emissions) sources within a chemical plant boundary
2. Interpret key carbon regulations (the European Union Emissions Trading System, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and carbon taxes) and assess their implications for chemical businesses
3. Construct a facility-level greenhouse gas inventory using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064 frameworks
4. Calculate carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from activity data and emission factors, and identify major emission hotspots
5. Compute emission intensity metrics and benchmark against industry standards
6. Identify energy efficiency opportunities and apply Pinch Analysis to quantify heat integration and carbon dioxide equivalent emission savings
7. Evaluate decarbonisation technologies (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, green hydrogen, electrification, bio-based feedstocks) using Marginal Abatement Cost curves
8. Select a cost-effective technology portfolio to meet an emission reduction target within a given budget
9. Produce a phased decarbonisation roadmap for a realistic chemical plant scenario, supported by financial reasoning
Entry Requirements
Learners should have basic proficiency in English and a general understanding of chemical plant operations and chemistry. Those with industrial experience in chemical or process engineering will benefit the most from this course.
