Drug Discovery and Development
About This Course
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to medicinal chemistry and its critical role in drug discovery and development. Learners will gain knowledge in molecular drug action, target identification, structure-activity relationships and modern design strategies, including high throughput screening methods. Learners will explore preclinical and clinical studies and analyse real-world case studies on existing drug molecules. By the end of the course, learners will be prepared for roles in drug innovation, research and development and contribute to advancing healthcare solutions globally.
As this micro-credential course is only offered in the FlexiMasters in Chemical Sciences and Instrumentation programme, learners are required to enrol in and complete all required courses within this programme.
What You'll Learn
• Extract concepts in drug discovery and development to align them with existing examples
• Explain the main concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics in drug action
• Use small molecules and orally active drugs to illustrate lead generation and optimisation
• Identify some representative drugs as chemical entities
• Apply the knowledge about chemical functional groups and their properties to correlate with the biological activities
• Apply structure-activity relationships to explain the biological activities
Entry Requirements
No pre-requisites are needed to enroll in the individual courses.
A minimum of two years of relevant working experience is preferred but not required.
Note: Shortlisting will be conducted by the School.
