Adapting Assessment for the AI Age: Practical Strategies for Adult Educators
About This Course
In this course, participants will learn how to redesign adult learning assessment for contexts where learners may use generative AI, and how to use AI to support assessment-related work without replacing assessor judgement. The course focuses on the practical distinction between assessment in the AI age and AI-enabled assessment.
Participants will examine why assessment can no longer rely only on final written products, and how assessment tasks, rubrics and evidence requirements can be shifted towards authenticated process, workplace application, verification, professional judgement and learner explanation.
Through hands-on activities, participants will redesign existing assessment tasks, specify permitted and prohibited AI use, create process-evidence requirements, revise assessment rubrics and build simple AI-enabled assessment support workflows for tasks such as formative feedback, rubric checking, evidence-gap review or moderation preparation. The course is platform-neutral and can be completed using free-access GenAI tools or tools provided in class. No paid AI subscription or coding experience is required.
What You'll Learn
• Differentiate between assessment in the AI age and AI-enabled assessment.
• Analyse assessment risks arising from learner use of GenAI, including weak process evidence and unclear AI-use conditions.
• Explain how authentic evidence, workplace artefacts, oral explanation and moderation trails support defensible assessment decisions.
• Evaluate appropriate GenAI-supported assessment uses while preserving assessor judgement and accountability.
• Redesign an existing assessment task with clear AI-use conditions, evidence requirements and assessor guidance.
• Develop a revised rubric that assesses reasoning, verification, judgement, application and transparent AI use.
• Construct learner instructions, declaration statements and process-evidence requirements.
• Test and refine an AI-enabled assessment support workflow using sample learner cases.
