The Art of Writing Creative Grant Proposals (Synchronous and Asynchronous e-learning)
About This Course
Many creative ideas never move beyond the concept stage, not due to lack of potential, but because translating them into structured, funder-ready proposals requires a different skillset. This practical, outcomes-driven course supports creatives in bridging that gap by learning how to communicate ideas with clarity, intent, and strategic alignment.
Designed by practitioners and former grant recipients, the course offers grounded perspectives on how successful applications are shaped in real-world contexts. Rather than focusing on any single funding body, it introduces commonly observed frameworks and approaches used across agencies such as the National Arts Council, Design Singapore Council, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), and National Heritage Board.
Participants will learn to articulate their creative vision, structure proposal narratives, and translate artistic ideas into clear, structured formats. Through guided exercises and case-informed discussions, the course covers key components typically expected in funding proposals, including defining project intent, outlining deliverables, developing budgets, and communicating impact.
A key emphasis is understanding both creative and evaluative perspectives. Participants will explore how proposals are interpreted, what makes ideas compelling to stakeholders, and how approaches may vary across contexts. The course also highlights the evolving nature of funding criteria, encouraging adaptable strategies, independent research, and direct engagement with funding bodies.
By the end, participants will develop a structured draft proposal as a working document, ready for further refinement and alignment with specific funding opportunities. A critique lab provides feedback on clarity, positioning, and communication, with opportunities for insights from invited practitioners or ecosystem partners.
