About This Course
The MA by research and PhD programmes provide postgraduate training for individuals who will contribute to knowledge production in and about Southeast Asia. Students will be taught by highly rated staff whose expertise lies in fields ranging from history, economics and political science to anthropology, cultural studies and archaeology. Our inter-disciplinary structure exposes students to the latest theoretical and methodological issues while also ensuring deep immersion in regional specificities.

Candidates will be taught by highly rated staff whose expertise lies in fields ranging from history, economics and political science to anthropology, cultural studies, and archaeology.
Our inter-disciplinary structure exposes students to the latest theoretical and methodological issues while also ensuring deep immersion in regional specificities. Graduates are prepared for academic careers and employment in research intensive professions which also expect working knowledge of Southeast Asian languages.
A candidate for the PhD programme must complete six courses as part of the coursework, which include a compulsory course, SE6770 Graduate Research Seminar. At least three courses must be at level 6000. Up to one course may be at level 4000. The remaining courses must be at level 5000 or 6000.
A candidate may, with the approval of the Head of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, read up to two Independent Study courses.
Other than completing the required coursework PhD candidates are also required to complete and submit a thesis for examination within the maximum period of his/her candidature.
