Determine the role of translation in literature and culture
Appraise the Chinese literary works and the translated version in terms of specific elements: setting, characters, action, theme, style, language, cultural references and symbols
Contrast the language features and styles for various types of Chinese literary works
Apply the appropriate methods, techniques and skills in translating literary works, such as prose, poems, novels and dramas
Execute the translation of Chinese literary works into English with appropriate formats, conventions, and cultural references
Examine principles and guidelines in translating various types of literary works
Criticize the translation of Chinese literary works based on the established principles
Collect the different translations of Chinese literary works and propose some principles to evaluate them and propose some principles to evaluate them

What You'll Learn

This course explores the theories and techniques of translating major Chinese literary genres including poetry, drama, fiction and prose. Background knowledge including the specific features and classification of Chinese literary works will be introduced while the appropriate translation techniques for each type of literary texts and the corresponding features will be analysed. Special attention will be paid to the differences between Chinese and English literary conventions and cultures. Selected translated Chinese literary works will be analysed to illustrate the problems and their solutions. Students are given opportunities to translate literary works from Chinese to English including literary essay, poems, short stories, and dramas.
