What You'll Learn
There are five major and minor Epics in Tamil Literature. The major Epics are: Cilapadikaram, Manimekalai, Civaga Cintamani, Valayapathi, and Kundalakesi. The most conspicuous common factor is that all of them arose in a period in which the Buddhists and the Jains were trying to establish themselves a foothold in Tamil Nadu. In Cilapathikaram religious expositions and ideas occur only incidentally while Manimekalai is a work with an explicit religious motivation. This course focuses on the major Epics, along with Kambaramayanam, Periyapuranam, Cirapuranam (Islamic Epic) and Iratchanya Yathirigam (Christian Epic). Analysis will be on selected portions of various poems, as most of them contain over 100 verses. This course also covers Epic Literatures of Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
