Demonstrate a knowledge of Saiva, Vaisnavite, Buddhist, Islamic and Christian literatures.
Recognise the contents and forms of devotional poems from Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
Illustrate key poetic elements in devotional poems (e.g. similes, metaphor).
Contrast the themes and writing styles of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
Outline the growth of devotional literature over the period.
Compare the role of voice, style, structure and thought in Saivaite, Vainavaite, Buddhist, Islamic and Christian literatures.
What You'll Learn
In Tamil Nadu, the Bhakthi Movement led to the emergence of devotional literature. Saints such as Nayanmars and Alwars contributed an array of poems categorized as Devotional Literature. The course covers Saivaite, Vaishnavite and Jainism, along with Buddhism and Islamic Literatures, representing to a rich source in Tamil literature. Students will become acquainted with the devotional poems of Thirugnaana Sambanthar, Thirunaavukarasar, Sundarar, Maanickavasar, Periyaalvar and Kulasegarar. They will also learn the devotional literature of Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
