About This Course

"For industrial automations almost 60% of the total electric energy produced in this world is converted back into mechanical energy by using electrical actuators. We need mechanical energy to perform various useful tasks such as for: transportation, industrial automation - to improve standard of living of human beings as well as to improve productivity in industries etc.
In this particular module, students would be introduced to various types of electric drives (AC and DC drives); how one can select a particular type of electric drive for a given application and how to control position, speed and torque of the drive system using Power Electronics and Control Circuits. This module is highly practical and has direct industrial relevance for all types of automation industries.

The course will combine the face-to-face classroom learning as well as virtual training modes. The students will also undertake exciting projects in groups to learn the application of the theoretical concepts taught during the course, go through simulation exercises to better understand electric drives and how they work. We plan to make the students capable of going through lab. experimental set-up to provide them with practical knowledge.

The expected learning outcomes are:
• understand the working principle of the DC drive system and how to control the torque, speed and position of the drive system;
• understand the working principle of an AC drive system and how to control the torque, speed and position of the drive system; and
• able to apply the knowledge gained to design and select components of a drive system for a given application in the automation industry.

What You'll Learn

"The course will cover the following topics:
1. DC Motor Drives
Starting and braking mechanism, Speed control: armature voltage control, field flux control and armature resistance control, Phase controlled rectifier fed DC drives, Dual-converter, Chopper control of DC motors -- Two and four quadrant choppers, Regenerative and dynamic braking, Closed--loop control.

2. AC Motor Drives
Speed control: Stator voltage and supply frequency control, AC voltage controller, Analysis of variable--frequency control, Inverters: Voltage--source inverters, Six--step inverter and Pulse--width modulated inverter, Performance of induction motor fed from a non-sinusoidal supply, Closed--loop control.

3. Synchronous Motor Drives
Variable--frequency control, Open-loop and closed--loop control, Self--controlled synchronous motor operation. Brushless DC Drives

4. Industrial Drive Application
Discussion on one or more of the state-of-the-art drive examples

For manufacturing industries automation is quite vital to improve productivity and maintain quality. For automation Electric Drives play an important part and this module would be providing the knowledge as to how electric drives work, what are their sub-components and how to chose and size the electric drive for a given application."
