About This Course

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the general developmental characteristics of children in early childhood from birth to 8 years of age;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of early brain development and the impact of positive interactions on child development and professional practice;
3. Explain the major developmental milestones and emerging skills of children from birth to 3 years of age;
4. Relate the philosophy of infant toddler care and development to the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF) Singapore
5. Identify the physical, social, cultural and environmental influences on early childhood development and family involvement;
6. Apply interaction techniques for infant and toddlers;
7. Explain the purpose of observation and demonstrate competence in recording and interpreting observation records of young children; and
8. Apply critical thinking skills for the analysis of children’s behaviour and behaviour guidance strategies in relation to developmental theories and milestones that characterise infancy and toddlerhood.

What You'll Learn

This module introduces students to research on brain developments and its implications on children’s growth and learning. Early Years developmental milestones will be discussed with significant emphasis on birth to three years of age. Students will develop an understanding of the philosophy of infant and toddler care and development, and the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF). Theories of child development, with emphasis on Attachment theory, characteristic behaviours, and their implications on play and care-giving practices for families and in the infant care context will be covered. Students will also learn appropriate behaviour guidance and interaction strategies for this age group of children that are informed by observations and documentations.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for DECCE-T are as follows:
For applicants who studied in Singapore:
(i) 5 GCE ‘O’ level credits including C6 in English Language (EL); or
(ii) A levels / IB without ‘O’ levels; OR
(iii) Local polytechnic diploma and a credit in ‘O’ level EL; OR
(iv) Higher Nitec in Early Childhood Education with GPA 3.0 or above; OR
(v) Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Care & Education (ACECCE) or equivalent with GPA 3.5 and 3 ‘O’ level credits, including a credit in EL (or acceptable alternatives)
(vi) All applicants preferably to have at least 1 year of work experience in addition to qualifications.
