Fi-Fai-Fonik: Learning Phonics in Malay through Play
About This Course
Fi-Fai-Fonik, is a creative approach to introduce Malay phonics through a holistic blending of authentic experiences by the learner. In Loris Malaguzzi's book, The Hundred Languages of Children, she stated what children learn does not follow as an automatic result from what is taught, rather, it is in large part due to the children's own doing, as a consequence of their activities and (teacher's) resources.
In this workshop, multimodal forms that diversify the possibilities for children to construct or express meanings and their understanding will be explored. For example, using a dance to illustrate the words of the same initial letter [bodily kinesthetic/ musical intelligence] or a treasure hunt map to find the words belonging to a letter [spatial intelligence]
Consequently, drawing inspiration from the classic folktale, 'Jack and the Beanstalk', Fi-Fai-Fonik's strategies seek to challenge the child to chart and take control of their own learning of phonics, moving away from traditional rote learning to become independent learners.
