About This Course
1. To equip participants with skills and knowledge on good practices and standard for cataract detection and referral.
2. To allow participants to gain further insights on patient’s journey on cataract management – surgical consideration and post-surgical care.
What You'll Learn
The course is designed to provide participants’ comprehensive learning and hands-on experience on cataract detection and decision-making on referral through a hybrid pedagogy of in-depth lecture and hands-on in-person workshops. A short assessment will be conducted at the end of each lecture component to evaluate participants’ understanding and grasp of knowledge.
The training consists of 4 sessions, which cover the following topics:
1) Understanding Patient’s Journey from Referral, Pre-Surgery, Surgery and Post-Surgery
2) Community Optometrists’ Role in Detecting and Referring Significant Cataract Cases
3) Post-Operative Follow-up and Refractive Management
4) Post-Operative Follow-up Examinations and Effective Communication on post cataract surgery care and counselling for fellow eye surgery
In the first component, participants can gain insights on patients' journey from cataract detection, referral, pre-surgery and post-surgery, identify cataract patients with appropriate clinical assessment methods, competent decision making on when to refer visually significant cataract, and urgency of referral and effective and informative communication skills on pre cataract surgery counselling.
In second component, participants will have the chance to do hands-on practice on real patients with various significant cataracts through the half day workshop.
For third component, participants will gain knowledge on the postoperative examinations for cataract patients, understand the different cataract removal methods and IntraOcular Lens (IOL) types, determine the common scenarios which indicate the need to re-refer to ophthalmologist post cataract surgery, recognise the refractive and prescribing approaches for post-cataract surgery patients and differentiate the pros and cons of monofocal and multifocal IOLs.
In the last session, participants will interact with real patients to identify post surgery complications and devise appropriate management plan.
