About This Course
Students will gain basic knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data models and skills in GIS mapping using common GIS software from this course. These are the entry-level knowledge and skills demanded by the geospatial industry. This course will prepare students for learning deeper topics in GIS and performing industry-relevant GIS tasks at intermediate to advanced levels such as GIS data handling, GIS database management, and spatial data analytics.
What You'll Learn
GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Using computer hardware and GIS software, we can display, query, analyze, and interpret geospatial data in visual ways, revealing patterns and relationships in the geographic world. GIS enables us to understand what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen in geographic space. Geospatial science has become increasingly important in developing solutions to global challenges such as sustainability, food security, healthcare management, and even rapid urbanization, amongst others, particularly with advancements in technologies like satellite systems or Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled devices.
This short course covers the following components: (1) Background on the development of GIS and its applications in different fields; (2) Introduction to GIS data including the vector data model and raster data model; (3) GIS mapping and geovisualization methods using GIS software.
