Digital Trade and Digital Economy
About This Course
At the end of the course, participants would be able to:
1. Understand how the internet and cross-border data flows are affecting a broad range of international economic activity;
2. Understand the development implications of the internet and data;
3. Analyse laws and regulations that affect cross-border data flows;
4. Understand the tensions that can arise between domestic regulation and cross-border data flows;
5. Interpret and apply at an advanced level trade law to digital trade challenges;
6. Be familiar with existing negotiations on digital trade rules at the WTO, FTAs and other economic forums such as the G20; and
7. Have the cognitive and technical skills to generate creative and critical ideas relating to digital trade regulation in the WTO and elsewhere.
What You'll Learn
This intensive course will consider digital trade's role within the global political economy and its benefits for international economic activity. Students will examine how international trade laws and treaties can affect cross-border digital trade, e-commerce, and emerging technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, autonomous technology and 5G). Students will explore the legal and economic implications of various regulatory barriers to digital trade, as well as their related public policy concerns (e.g. privacy and cybersecurity), and learn about facilitating digital trade infrastructure, the key intellectual property issues in digital trade, and the linkages between trade and investment in the digital economy.
Entry Requirements
A good Bachelor's or Juris Doctor degree in Law
