About This Course

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the role of international arbitration in resolving energy disputes, encompassing both commercial and investment arbitration contexts;
2. Analyze the substantive content of national and international energy laws, and evaluate their application in the resolution of energy disputes;
3. Examine the procedural specificities of energy disputes, including unique considerations such as industry standards, regulatory frameworks, and specialized arbitration rules; and
4. Explore the political dimensions of energy disputes, including domestic issues such as resource sovereignty and international aspects such as inter-state boundary disputes, as well as recent debates on the intersection of international arbitration, climate change, and sustainable development.

This course is offered under the Faculty of Law's Graduate Coursework Programmes in International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution.

This course introduces international arbitration's role in resolving energy disputes. Seminars will address both commercial and investment arbitration.The substantive content of national and international energy laws will be discussed together with the procedural specificities of energy disputes. The course will explore the political aspects of energy disputes, both domestic (resource sovereignty) and international (inter-state boundary disputes). Participants will study the recent debates on the role of international arbitration vis-à-vis climate change and sustainable development. The course incorporates practical exercises that will help participants interested in a career in international arbitration and public international law.
