What You'll Learn
This course aims to analyse contemporary Malay theatre in Singapore, starting with an exploration of the history and development of Singapore Malay theatre, and proceeding to to appraise various postmodernist theories that facilitate an understanding of Malay theatre. The course will analyse how Malay Theatre reflects the Malay social, political and religious perspective in Singapore’s multicultural and multi-ethnic landscape. It will also provide an in-depth exploration of the philosophy and values found in local Malay theatre by analysing selected modern Malay theatre works. Finally, the course will conclude with a discussion of the challenges faced by Malay theatre works in Singapore today and possibly in the future.
