About This Course
Course Objective
The objective of the course is to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to understand the various issues that accompany ageing which includes Geriatric syndrome, medication and fall risk, mobility and nutrition issues; and the relevant support and skills training techniques for transfer and position, infection prevention and control, perineal and catheter care, health monitoring, escort services and suitable exercises to enable them to age well in the community.
This course is administered by Hua Mei Training Academy, an initiative of Tsao Foundation.
What You'll Learn
There are seven (7) learning units (LUs) in this course.
LU1: Explain Geriatric Syndromes and the different aspects of ADLs and nursing care.
LU2: Discuss common factors on fall risks, effective techniques for transfer and positioning, and the different types of mobility aids suitable for the older person.
LU3: Understand the impact of effective monitoring of health and medication for the older person.
LU4: Understand the importance of nutritional needs and exercises required to support the older person in successful ageing.
LU5: Understand Elimination Management (constipation care) in the care of older person.
LU6: Discuss Infection Prevention/Control and safe practices especially in the provision of perineal and catheter care for older person who are unable to provide self-care.
LU7: Understand the different aspects of handling emergency crisis and escorts for older persons.
Entry Requirements
Those who are 21 years old and above with at least 3 years of working experience in any industry. The required skills and knowledge for this course are as follows:
● Education:
● be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) Literacy Level 4
● be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) Literacy Level 4
● be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills System (ESS) Numeracy Level 4
● have basic languages / dialects relevant to the target client group.
● Have prior working experience with older adults will be an added advantage
● Be motivated to learn and have positive attitude towards work and commitments.
● Have interest in community and social work.
