About This Course

Objectives:
At the end of the programme, participants are expected to achieve the following objectives:
1.. Attain an understanding of the aetiology, symptomology and evidence-based treatment approaches to common psychotic disorders.
2. Ability to appreciate the effects of the illness on individuals and their families, and more effectively co-work with mental health professionals to support them in their recovery journey.
3. Appreciate the relationship between psychotic symptoms and risk of violence to others.
4. Ability to apply a biopsychosocial and systemic approach in the management of complex cases with persons with the common pdychotic disorders.
Application:
At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to be able to do the following:
1. Screen for symptoms /presentations of psychotic disorders for prevention and early treatment.
2. Apply the phenomenology of persons with psychotic disorders and skills to engage them, will faciliate more effective therapeutic alliance and social work intervention with them, and their significant others.
3. Take a multi-disciplinary approach in making risk assessments involving persons who may bring harm to the self and others.
3. Apply a systemic approach to working with persons afflicted with psychosis and their significant others.

What You'll Learn

This module aims to inform social work practitioners with knowledge (aetiology, symptomology, evidenced based treatment, treatement challenges) of the more common psychotic disorders such as Psychosis, Schizophrenia and Delusional Disorder.

Participants will learn to appreciate their world of persons with the common psychotic disorders in order to enhance engagement and effective supportive work with them and their significant others. It also addresses the relationship between violence and psychotic disorders.

Social work intervention approaches to working with persons with these disorders, especially where issues of non-compliance and risks of harm to self and others are present.
