About This Course

Objectives:
At the end of the programme, participants are expected to achieve the following objectives:
1. Attain an understanding of the aetiology, symptomology and evidence-based treatment approaches to depressive disorders.
2. Ability to appreciate the effects of depressive disorders on individuals and their families, and co-work with mental health professionals to support them in their recovery journey.
3. Know the difference between depression, anxiety and grief disorders,
4. Ability to apply knowledge and skills in taking a systemic approach to the management of complex cases and other psycho-social interventions related to depressive disorders.
Application:
At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to be able to do the following:
1. Enable social workers to detect early symptoms/presentations of depressive disorders for prevention and early treatment, counselling or casework support. The ability to differentiate normal grief from depressive disorders is important.
2. Ability to engage persons with depressive symptoms and their significant others for social work intervention.
3. Apply a systemic, multi-disciplinary and community-based approach to working with persons afficted with psychosis and their significant others.

What You'll Learn

This module aims to inform participants with knowledge (aetiology, symptomologys, treatment, treatment challenges) of depressive disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and dysthymia.
Special focus will be given the relationship between depression and grief during bereavement.
Social work intervention approaches to working with persons with depressive disorders will be discussed.
