Data, Technology and Design
About This Course
In the real world, professionals will go through a full life cycle data science project which involves understanding the business use case first and then applying data science concepts to solve the problem.
This course will take the students through this process via real world case studies and a real-world popular technology platform like Microsoft Azure Machine Learning.
The emphasis in the course is about using data science to solve real world problems in the spirit of “men et manus” from MIT (mind and hand), SUTD’s origins.
This course addresses three key issues with regards to the active use of data:
(i) The theory and practice of data curation, data scrubbing, principles of various database management systems, data preparation, and data wrangling/transformation
(ii) Data visualization (dashboards and infographics) with effective and aesthetic techniques
(iii) Data governance, data stewardship, and data ethics.
The technology platforms the course will use is primarily Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Power Business Intelligence (BI). We will use examples from the two books and use hands on exercises and interactive learning to augment the lecture portion of the class.
