About This Course

A course designed to equip aspiring, career-track and current technology leaders (Chief Technology Officers (CTOs), Chief Information Officer (CIO), Information Technology (IT) Directors, Distinguished Engineers) to be equipped with the needed knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to excel in their critical leadership role as Chief Open Source Officers (COSOs). Open source software is ubiquitous and an indispensable tool for businesses of all sizes, the demand for skilled COSOs to effectively manage and integrate these technologies has skyrocketed. The course will ground the learners on the history of free and open source software, the genesis of these ideas, how these have become ubiquitous in all industries. It will provide a forum for the participants to challenge their understanding of how open source technologies provide outstanding benefits to their businesses. While deriving benefits, they will also need to appreciate the challenges, the expectations of give back and how new ideas and areas in technology will impact their businesses.

What You'll Learn

Skills gained would be in working with the open source communities. These are communities that come together to solve a technical challenge. These could be achieved intra organisationally or collaborating externally. By being an on-par participant in the open source communities, the multiplier effect of solving issues would be significant. Understanding the expectations and the modes of collaboration when financial rewards are not the driving force (in the first instance). This will create a group of technology thought leaders who can work across their own organisations as well as between organisations identifying areas worthy of collaboration and aided by the various licensing frameworks embodied in open source licensing. They will gain insights and be able to appreciate the nuances of open source licenses such as the GNU’s Not Unix (GNU) General Public Licenses, the Apache Licenses etc.
