What You'll Learn
Safety planning is crucial to ensure that children can remain in their families despite having experienced child protection dangers or safety issues in the family. Robust safety planning requires involvement of family members and both formal and informal networks. It needs to include the children, non-offending caregiver, extended family members, school, childcare or other social service professionals and more importantly, the parent/person who caused harm.
Today, professionals are required to develop safety plans and actively monitor these safety plans to ensure that the children remain safe with their families. Safety planning is an important intervention to prevent danger from escalating and ensure enduring safety for children and families who have experienced child protection and family violence issues.
The training aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and monitor safety plan. Learners will be introduced to the 5.5-step model that comprises understanding of red flags that derail safety plan discussions, creative strategies and techniques on how to work with children and caregivers, psycho-education and intervention plans.
The training will also highlight the importance of holding critical conversations with the children and their families, as well as the importance of collaborating with the family’s informal and formal networks to increase the effectiveness of safety plans.
