About This Course

The Tripartite Maritime Training Award (TMTA) is a career development programme that prepares Singaporeans and Permanent Residents to join the maritime industry and pursue their aspirations as Marine Engineers onboard ocean-going ships.
The Pre-Sea Preparation Training Course, aka Phase 1, prepares students for their shipboard training. They will attend full-time classroom-based training and practical lessons for four months, covering a series of modules listed below. The course is in accordance with the provisions of regulation III/1.2 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW 1978).
Bite-sized e-learning nuggets and quizzes form the bulk of the course material for teaching and learning. These e-learning nuggets promote differentiated learning for students with diverse backgrounds. The course leverages on the use of technology for teaching, learning and assessment, with hands on simulator exercises in the Full Mission Engine Room Simulator. The course is facilitated by senior practitioners in their pursuit of knowledge, skills, and safe working practices required in the industry.

MODULES
Four months are spent in class completing the following modules:
1. Orientation/Induction Course for Cadet Engineers
2. Engine Room Simulator I
3. Instrumentation
4. Marine Engineering I
5. Marine Engineering II
6. Internal & External Communications
7. Maritime English
8. Electrotechnology I

What You'll Learn

1)Engine Room Simulator I - To provide students with simulator software which creates the realism by displaying the various process variables in the local instrument gauges and noise that corresponds to the current engine room scenario
2)Instrumentation -To provide students with the basic knowledge of shipboard instrumentation covering the requirements of watch-keeping engineers at operational level
3)Marine Engineering I -To provide students with the knowledge and understanding of working principles and constructional features of marine auxiliaries and machines
4)Marine Engineering II-To provide students with the knowledge and understanding of working principles and constructional features of marine diesel engines and steam generating plants. It will also highlight the fluid systems supporting marine diesel engines and boilers.
5)Electrotechnology I -To instill in students a sound knowledge of fundamental principles of Electrical Technology. It prepares the students with basic electrical knowledge prior to joining their cadet ship.
6) Basic Workshop Practice I(Mechanical)-To provide students with basic practical skills and related theoretical knowledge in electrical and mechanical practice. The module also aims to develop safety consciousness and proper work attitudes in the students
7) Basic Workshop Practice III(Electrical)-To provide students with basic practical skills and related theoretical knowledge in electrical practice. The module also aims to develop safety consciousness and proper work attitudes in the students.
8)Engineering Drawing -To provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills in producing drawings of engineering components, single line diagrams, block diagrams of engineering systems of other related disciplines, and marine machinery assembly drawings.
9)Ship Stability -An introduction to the fundamentals of ship stability as applied in shipboard practice. It aims to provide students with the basic tools.
