Plant Identification Level 1
About This Course
This competency-based training programme is designed for learners in the landscape sectors and the F&B sectors to identify plants.
Plant identification is essential for individuals in the or who are keen to work in the landscape sector because it enables them to select, place, and maintain plants appropriately based on their characteristics, growth habits, and environmental requirements. Accurate identification ensures that the right plants are used for the right purposes—whether for aesthetics, shade, erosion control, or biodiversity. It helps prevent costly mistakes such as planting invasive or unsuitable species, and supports effective communication with clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies. Additionally, understanding plant names and traits is crucial for designing sustainable landscapes, diagnosing plant health issues, and achieving long-lasting, visually appealing outdoor environments.
Plant identification is important for F&B businesses because it ensures the safe and accurate use of ingredients in food preparation and presentation. Many F&B resturants are growing their own crops to remain sustainable and to lower cost. In this respect, they require skills and knowledge in plant identification. Knowing the correct plant species helps prevent the accidental use of toxic or inedible plants, protects customer health, and supports compliance with food safety regulations. It also enables chefs and staff to grow and select the freshest, most flavorful herbs, garnishes, and edible flowers. Accurate plant knowledge enhances menu authenticity and quality, especially in cuisines that rely on traditional or wild-harvested ingredients. In short, plant identification contributes to safety, quality control, and elevated culinary standards in F&B operations. This course offers learners essential skills to accurately recognize and name a wide range of plant species, both common and botanical.
