About This Course

A dashboard is not a collection of charts. It is a decision interface. The difference between data that sits in a workbook and data that drives action is visualisation judgement: choosing the right visual for the question, organising large data sets coherently, and communicating the key message so the right person can act on it quickly and confidently.

Using Tableau as the build environment, this course teaches data visualisation as applied data storytelling. You will learn to select the right visualisation technique for each data type, analytical question, and target audience; design structured dashboards with clear visual hierarchy that present data at several levels of detail, from broad overview to fine drill-down; configure interactive features that let stakeholders explore data without losing interpretive control; and analyse and interpret what the visuals reveal, evaluating data to draw comparisons against internal KPIs and external benchmarks and to surface meaningful patterns, trends, and insights. You will also learn to communicate what the data does not show, handling limitations, confidence, and null values responsibly.

The emphasis is on visual judgement as much as technical execution. Anyone can produce a chart. This course teaches you to design graphics that communicate key messages, adapt them to how different audiences process visual information, and build executive-ready Tableau dashboards that benchmark performance, reflect trends, and guide business decisions with clarity and confidence.

What You'll Learn

By the end of the course, trainees will be able to:
- Apply Tableau's visual encoding system deliberately across the full chart and mark type library
- Select appropriate data visualisation techniques for each data type, analytical objective, and target audience
- Build Tableau-specific display types including heat maps, highlight tables, bullet charts, and combined axis views
- Design structured dashboards using layout containers, tiled and floating elements, device-specific views, and visual hierarchy principles that present data from broad overview to fine detail
- Configure interactive features including filters, dashboard actions, parameters, and highlight controls for guided data exploration
- Build dynamic display elements using calculated fields, LOD expressions, and set actions to answer deeper analytical questions
- Analyse and interpret visualised data to identify meaningful patterns, trends, and insights, evaluating comparisons against internal - KPIs and external benchmarks with reference lines, target lines, reference bands, and variance indicators
- Apply visual editing discipline by removing chart junk, formatting graphics to communicate key messages clearly, and adapting dashboards to how executive and analyst audiences process visual information
- Communicate data limitations responsibly using annotations, disclaimers, confidence intervals, and null value handling within Tableau
