Mirrorless & DSLR Photography Essentials
About This Course
Owning a professional camera does not automatically produce professional results. Control does.
This course transitions learners from smartphone shooting to full manual operation on mirrorless and DSLR systems: how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO interact on a large sensor, how to read a histogram and shoot RAW, and the physics of interchangeable lenses, including focal length, crop factor, depth-of-field control, and prime versus zoom trade-offs.
A dedicated lighting module covers the set-up and operations of lighting equipment during shoots. Trainees set up, position, and operate speedlights and continuous lights alongside natural light, adjusting technical parameters such as sync speed and flash exposure compensation to manage the lighting conditions of the shooting environment and create the desired lighting effects, and learn the creative impact of different types of lighting equipment, a capability that only becomes meaningful on a system with flash sync.
The course then turns to narrative design. Each trainee plans and shoots a structured photo story, designing narrative elements that develop content flow and align with story progression: applying storytelling techniques to create an engaging narrative for the intended audience, building a series that begins, develops, and resolves, sequencing images so the narrative structure carries the story, and presenting the narrative decisions behind each frame. A complete import-to-export workflow in Lightroom Desktop establishes the professional capture-to-edit pipeline behind it all.
What You'll Learn
- Identify the physical differences between mirrorless and DSLR systems, including EVF versus optical viewfinder, autofocus systems, and battery behaviour, and navigate the camera menu with confidence
- Apply the exposure triangle on a large-sensor system, controlling how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO interact to produce intentional results across different shooting conditions
- Read a histogram as an exposure confirmation tool, differentiate RAW from JPEG, and apply the expanded editing latitude RAW files provide
- Identify the characteristics of interchangeable lenses, including focal length, crop factor, and prime versus zoom trade-offs, and control depth of field and subject isolation using aperture
- Select lenses strategically for different genres and creative directions
- Set up and operate lighting equipment during photo shoots, including speedlights and continuous lights, adjusting technical parameters to manage the lighting conditions of the shooting environment and create desired lighting effects
- Apply the creative impact of different types of lighting equipment and fixtures alongside intermediate natural light management
- Apply colour and compositional principles to maximise visual impact
- Execute a complete import-to-export workflow in Lightroom Desktop, from card to library, basic develop corrections, and JPEG export for web and print
- Design narrative elements to develop content flow and align with story progression, applying storytelling techniques to produce a structured 8 to 12 image photo story with an engaging narrative that begins, develops, and resolves
