Video Editing with DaVinci Resolve
About This Course
DaVinci Resolve is a fundamentally different production environment from the consumer tools most creators start with: a page-based workflow that separates assembly, precision trimming, audio finishing, colour grading, and delivery into distinct professional workspaces. This course builds the complete post-production discipline that structure exists to serve.
The work begins with the story. Trainees interpret scripts and production briefs and break down scene-by-scene requirements before touching the footage, designing narrative elements to develop content flow and align with story progression: which shot carries each story beat, where B-roll covers a narrative gap, and how pacing and rhythm carry longer-form content from documentary interview to corporate communications to branded film. Assembly then follows the breakdown, fast on the Cut page, precise on the Edit page, so the sequence serves the story the script defined.
Sound is treated as its own craft. Trainees practise sound editing and sound mixing: dialogue, music, and ambient sound sequences are edited, refined, and arranged to meet creative and technical requirements, and the levels of combined sound elements are balanced into audio mixes for production delivery, applying EQ, compression, and noise reduction and mixing to broadcast and online loudness standards.
The visual finish completes the workflow: colour grading to a consistent visual identity on the Color page using the node-based workflow and scopes, enhancement and imperfection cleanup, and delivery correctly specified and verified for broadcast, digital, and client archive.
By the end of the course, trainees will be able to take a multi-source footage package from script breakdown to a graded, mixed, and professionally delivered sequence, executing the complete post-production workflow to the standard commercial work demands.
What You'll Learn
- Interpret a script or production brief and analyse scene-by-scene narrative requirements, designing narrative elements to develop content flow and align with story progression before placing a single clip on the timeline
- Import and organise multi-source footage in DaVinci Resolve using the Media Pool, bins, and metadata tagging, and create shot selection logs for efficient collaboration and revision
- Assemble sequences quickly on the Cut page using the dual-timeline view, source tape, and smart insert tools, and refine them with precision on the Edit page using the blade tool, trim modes, position lock, and inspector
- Apply video theory and continuity principles for story logic across multi-source sequences using 3-point, 4-point, cutaway, and multi-camera techniques
- Apply pacing and rhythm principles for longer-form content across interview documentary, corporate communications, and branded film structures
- Edit, refine, and arrange sound sequences on the Fairlight page to meet creative and technical requirements, managing dialogue, music, and ambient tracks with EQ, compression, and noise reduction
- Balance the levels of combined sound elements to create audio mixes for production delivery, mixing to broadcast and online loudness standards
- Apply visual enhancement and imperfection cleanup, including stabilisation, Fusion titles and motion graphics, and Speed Change and Retime tools
- Grade footage on the Color page using the node-based workflow, Primary Corrector, Curves, Qualifier, and scopes, grading consistently to a visual identity
- Apply delivery standards for broadcast, commercial, and client archive contexts, inspecting for technical compliance, exporting through the render queue with delivery presets (H.264, ProRes, MXF), and collaborating with production teams through review and export workflows
